“I am not African because I was born in Africa, but because Africa was born in me”

  • ABOUT ME

I fight whole-heartedly for Africa to live peacefully and in harmony. Africa is so beautiful and calm. Africa is hinged deep down in my heart. Anyone against Africa is against all humanity and human dignity. Africa is the source of life. "I love you Africa"

"I will pray for the people of this land
I will hold them close to me
Together one day there'll be sweet harmony
Let’s be patient peacefully" - Steve Kekana

    GROWING UP

Simon Peter Bukenya is an African male of Ugandan origin born in the central part of the beautiful East African country, Uganda, in the Buganda Kingdom. Born in June 1996, Simon spent his first 12 years on earth in the central part of Uganda, where he completed his primary level education. Simon completed his kindergarten education from St. Paul Nursery School in Nsambya, Kampala. He then joined Kingsway Nursery and primary school where he studied for 2 and a half years, while subsequently leaving to join St. Peter's Primary school, Nsambya and later completing his primary school education at Sacred Heart of Jesus primary school, Jinja Karoli, in Kawempe, Wakiso district.

At the onset of the second decade of the 2000's, Simon relocated to the south western part of Uganda, in Mbarara, Ankole region where he spent about six years undertaking his secondary school education at St. Joseph's Vocational School. While in Ankole, where his home is, he did alot of agriculture on a subsistence level with the people he lived with. The practice offered him experience in natural farming and ultimately gaining passion for natural farming and environmental conservation.

After completion of his secondary school, Simon returned to central Uganda to pursue a degree in Mass Communication and journalism where his professional passion was. He was previously the Editor in Chief of the Writer's Club of St. Joseph's Vocational School and the school Magazine and wanted to become a journalist.

    PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

After graduating with a Second Class Upper, Honours degree, Simon did some short term consultancies with the Uganda Electoral Commission in preparation for the 2021 general elections. With completion of the short consultancies, Simon volunteered with the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA), the largest civil society network and movement in Africa before COVID-19 hit Uganda.

After the easing down of the COVID-19 restrictions in Uganda in July 2020, Simon was approached by the Vision Group, Uganda's leading media house and was offered to work with them as a sub editor. Simon worked in the newsroom as a sub editor at the Vison Group, before being offered an internship position at AFSA, which he accepted without hesitation. Because of his passion in natural farming and environmental protection which AFSA is a leading advocate for on the African continent, Simon felt that he would be providing an impactful service to the continent while working with AFSA.

Simon was promoted to a programme officer position in Agroecology and Climate Change at AFSA, a position he currently holds and has helped the organisation reach a number of impactful milestones. He also supports in youth related activities of the AFSA Youth Platform.
